Chamber Music by the Sea

“This place has everything… except a chamber music festival!” That was the thought that ran through the mind of Elena Urioste, violinist and Chamber Music by the Sea’s Artistic Director, over 15 years ago when she first visited Berlin, Maryland. The stunning beauty of Assateague Island National Seashore, the picturesque charm of the towns of Berlin and Snow Hill, the delicious local food, a real appreciation for art of all varieties — it seemed like an ideal location to set up a summer chamber music festival. In 2016, Elena did just that, bringing some of her closest friends and colleagues to the area to soak in some prime summer sun and make music. The festival, now an annual August event, has bloomed to include concerts in Snow Hill and on South Point in addition to Berlin, and has a strong commitment to education, involving young local musicians in both outreach activities and in the concerts themselves. Chamber Music by the Sea, generously sponsored by the Worcester County Education Foundation, is a completely symbiotic festival, the musicians deriving as much joy from the gorgeous scenery and warmth of the locals as the audience does from the world class musicianship infusing Maryland’s Eastern Shore each summer.
