Quitting Your Day Job

Quitting Your Day Job

Passage: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18

Have you ever been told not to “quit your day job?” What an insult, right? It means that someone doesn’t think your good enough to make a living doing something different or something you like. “Don’t quit your day” job means “don’t even try!”

In our Gospel reading for Sunday, Jesus says just the opposite to Peter, Andrew, James and John. Finding them fishing on the Sea of Galilee, He calls out to them and says: “Follow Me!” Essentially, Jesus is saying: “Quit your day job! I’ve got something better for you to do – and you’re going to be great at it!”

It took great risk for these guys to quit their days jobs, drop their nets, and follow Jesus. (Not the least of which was the scolding they’d get from Zebedee when they got home!) They all gave up so much to follow Him - and much would be required of them. Were they really up for the task? You bet they were! That’s why Jesus asked them! He knew they had what it would take to “fish for people” before they knew they had it in themselves.

Do we have what it takes? Are we up to the task? You bet we are!  Jesus still asks us to follow Him.  To do so, though, still requires His followers to take risks and give up much. What might we give up – walk away from – what attachments might we let go in order to fully follow and allow our faith to take hold  and grow?

Think about it.  Pray about it.  Read God’s word, and then, let’s choose to follow Jesus more closely into His realm of love.
